Autonomy & proactiveness
The six parts of an agent are what it's made of. Autonomy is what they produce when they run together on their own.
This is the distinction that matters: "autonomous" and "proactive" aren't separate features bolted on — they're what happens when purpose, thinking, action, and safety cycle in a loop with no human in the middle.
What autonomy actually means
An autonomous agent keeps the loop running without you:
- 1.It holds a purpose you set.
- 2.It thinks through the next step.
- 3.It acts — runs the tool, makes the change.
- 4.It checks its own work.
- 5.It goes again — until the goal is met.
You're not in that loop turn-by-turn. You set the direction and you're brought back in only when it matters.
Proactiveness is part of autonomy
Proactiveness isn't a separate thing — it's a purpose, running on its own, that acts before you ask.
Because an agent holds a goal and keeps watching, it notices things and acts ahead:
- —A client hasn't replied in five days → it drafts the follow-up.
- —A deadline is approaching → it reorders your priorities.
- —Spending looks off → it flags it before it becomes a problem.
A chatbot can't do this — it only exists while you're typing. A proactive agent exists continuously, which is only possible because it runs on your own machine, always on.
Autonomy is earned, not just switched on
Handing real autonomy to something that fabricates results would be dangerous. So in Mylo, autonomy is earned through verification — not a switch you flip.
An agent starts close to you — proposing, confirming, showing its work. As it proves it can verify its own results honestly, it earns room to run further on its own. The more reliably it backs its work with evidence, the more it's trusted to act without a check at every step.
You always keep the dial. You decide how much an agent runs on its own, and that setting can stay tight (confirm before acting) or open (run and report) — your call, per agent.
You only see what needs you
The point of autonomy isn't to hide everything — it's to free your attention. A well-run autonomous agent surfaces only the things that genuinely need a human: a decision, a risk, a confirmation. Everything it handled cleanly, it just handled.
When there's nothing for you, that's success — not an empty feed to worry about. The work happened; you didn't have to watch it.
